Osprey

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) were driven to almost extinction in the UK (they were down to just 1 surviving pair in Scotland) and have been a re-introduction success due to schemes like the one at Rutland Water which started in 1996. After 30 years, there have now been over 300 chicks fledged in Rutland.

The pair at Manton Bay in Rutland are Maya (unringed) and 33. Maya has now come back for her 17th breeding season and her life partner (33) always comes back from their migration in West Africa (about 3,000 miles away) within a day or so of her arrival.
