Eagle (Golden)

The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is an iconic, large bird of prey found mostly in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. While historically wiped out in England and Wales during the 19th century, conservation efforts are underway to support their return to English skies.

I have yet to take a half decent photograph of a Golden Eagle!

There are 30 pairs currently (2026) on Mull, but they tend to be very high in the mountains and difficult to photograph. I will have to keep trying.

A Golden Eagle is slightly smaller than the White Tailed Eagle, but more likely to win in a fight! A Goldie can lift four times it's own body weight and can take a red deer calf. They also drive adult red deer over cliff tops in order to feed on the carcass.
