The Common Crane (Grus grus) is the UK's tallest bird, standing up to 1.2 meters high. Once extinct in Britain for 400 years due to hunting and wetland loss, they have made a remarkable comeback through natural recolonization and conservation projects like the WWT Crane school. The total UK population is now around 250 birds.
